At Marywood University, Yamilé Nader, a member of the Class of 2027 majoring in Multimedia Communications: Film, TV, and Digital Production, has found both a creative home and a strong sense of community.
When reflecting on her college decision, Nader describes Marywood as an immediate fit. “Marywood was an easy choice when deciding where I wanted to spend the next four years of my life,” she explains. “I loved the campus the minute I set foot into the LAC, and I loved the Catholic community here as well.” She was especially excited about her academic program, noting the support she felt right away: “I am part of the Multimedia Communications department, and I appreciated how much the advisor cared about students and how it was very clear how much she believed in us.”
The University’s hands-on learning spaces and close-knit environment also stood out. “I also really liked the TV studio and the classes they offered for my major,” she says. Another thing I loved about Marywood is the small campus, which makes it so much easier to connect with peers and professors. I’ve built friendships and connections I wouldn’t have had otherwise.”
Financial aid has played a meaningful role in her journey. “I do receive financial aid from the University,” Nader shares. “It has made a huge difference in my ability to attend Marywood because if it weren’t for that extra help, it would be very difficult for me to afford it.”
Since arriving on campus, Nader has built an impressive list of accomplishments. “During my time at Marywood, I earned strong grades, attended a conference in Connecticut called NACA (National Association for Campus Activities), served as an Orientation Leader, worked at a local news station, and formed meaningful connections with my professors that have helped me grow both professionally and personally. I’ve also made wonderful friendships that have shaped who I am today.”
Through these experiences, she has gained valuable perspective. “The greatest lesson I’ve learned at Marywood is that it is okay to accept help and that I can achieve whatever I set my mind and heart to,” she says. She credits the University community for helping her grow in confidence: “I’ve been empowered by the people around me. If it weren’t for the Marywood community I wouldn’t be so confident in myself and my abilities.”
Nader’s campus involvement reflects her passion for media, leadership, and service. She serves as Assistant Director for Marywood Films, Class Senator for the Class of 2027, Executive Chair for L’CASA, and Coordinator for the Pacer Programming Board. She is also a multimedia staff member of The Wood Word, a DJ for VMFM 91.7, and an active member of Kindness Klub and the Muslim Student Association, in addition to working as an Orientation Leader.
Looking ahead, Nader has clear goals for her future. “In five years, I see myself working on a film set as an assistant producer or director,” she says, “while also creating my own personal projects with the friends I have made at Marywood.” She feels well prepared for what lies ahead. “I am confident in my future because of the experiences I’ve had here. I wouldn’t have gotten my news job last summer without the opportunities and connections I’ve built at Marywood.”
She is especially grateful for the generosity of Marywood’s donor community. “If it weren’t for their support, we wouldn’t have the new radio station and the equipment we use today,” she says. “Their donations truly make a difference, and we are incredibly grateful for their selflessness and generosity. Thank you to all the donors who support us each year and enhance our experience at Marywood.”
Inspired by her own experience, Nader hopes to give back one day. “I would absolutely give to Marywood because I want to be part of the positive change that supports future students in receiving a great education.”
As she looks toward graduation, Nader anticipates a mix of emotions. “I will feel sad and excited to put everything I have learned into action,” she says, “and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
